Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp fears Joel Matip could be out for months after suffering what is believed to be a serious knee injury.

The Kop defender, who's in the final year of his contract, underwent a scan yesterday at lunchtime to determine the extent of the injury he suffered in the second half against Fulham on Sunday.

Matip, 32, will obviously miss tonight’s clash with Sheffield United at Bramall Lane as the club wait to find out the full length of time the Cameroon international is absent for.

Klopp said: "When the doctor comes in and says 'it doesn't look great' [you worry] but we have to wait for the scans and the scan isn't here yet. So you can imagine it doesn't look great. It is never good news [when the doc says that straight away].

“I've never had that in all my years where someone says 'oh my God, it's [the initial diagnosis on an injury] completely wrong, there's nothing wrong, he can play tomorrow'. It doesn't happen."

Who should Liverpool look to sign in the transfer market at centre-half in 2024? Let the club know in our comments section.

The Reds taken on the Blades on Wednesday as they travel to Sheffield preparing to face Chris Wilder’s side instead of Paul Heckingbottom. And Klopp joked he’s had to bin all his pre-match analysis because of the change of manager.

“First thing is we can probably bin our analysis,” he said. “I was sitting yesterday in the office and somebody told me it might happen but I watched it anyway. We will see.

“We have to focus on ourselves. I don’t think he will now change too much. What can he change in that short period? We don’t have to think too much about it. We really should just prepare for a football game. We play teams with five at the back, 5-3-2 and 5-4-1, quite frequently, to be honest.

“We have to make sure we give them a proper job to think about. I understand it’s always like that – a new manager coming in and now we start getting confused; we shouldn’t.

“Actually, we can play in different ways and as much I am happy for Chris that he’s back in a job there at his club, if he thinks about us then it must be, ‘Oh my God, they come from everywhere.’ That’s pretty much the thing, but the game will be played tomorrow, not today in the press conference.”

Liverpool will still be red-hot favourites to keep their title bid on track with another win but Klopp isn’t looking for a load of goals as 1-0 will do.

He added: “I just want to win the football game. And with all these circumstances it is difficult. The results of other teams will be discussed afterwards in the forums not in our rooms. We want to win the game and if that is 1-0 then I'm fine with that.

"But, first and foremost, I want to play a really good football game with the boys. We have to make steps, we have to improve. That is what I am concerned about. And if we do that we will get the result we want."
