Liverpool hero Didi Hamann has called Manchester United a “shadow of its former self” in a damning indictment on their current position under Erik ten Hag following their disappointing draw with Galatasaray. United have been poor in Europe this season, but had their destiny in their own hands on Wednesday night when they twice opened up a two-goal lead in the hostile Istanbul atmosphere.

But mistakes from Andre Onana cost United dearly as they had to share a point with Galatasaray, leaving them bottom of their group. United now have to win against Bayern Munich in their final group game and rely on Copenhagen and Galatasaray’s match ending in a draw to qualify for the knockout stage.

The Red Devils have been in and out of the Champions League for several years now having been regulars in the competition under Sir Alex Ferguson. Since the legendary Scottish manager retired in 2013, United have only featured in the knockout phase of the Champions League in four out of the 10 seasons.

Hamann has taken aim at the current United side, insisting they’re far away from repeating the success of Ferguson’s great teams at Old Trafford.

And the Liverpool hero doubts whether Ten Hag’s side will be able to make it out of their group when it comes to beating Bayern. “Man United is a shadow of its former self,” he told Sky Germany.

“The team cannot be compared to the big teams under Sir Alex Ferguson. They would have to beat Bayern to advance, which is questionable in my opinion.
