Fernando Alonso believes that the FIA’s recent pit-lane exit rule changes have only served to add more ‘stress’ for the drivers and teams during qualifying. Race director Niels Wittich made another unpopular change to qualifying procedures ahead of Saturday’s running at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

The FIA introduced new rulings that forced drivers to make room for faster ones to overtake on the exit of the pit lane at the Brazilian Grand Prix. This change was brought in to solve the issue of cars moving extremely slowly to make room for qualifying out-laps.

While unpopular, these changes did work with George Russell and Esteban Ocon among the drivers who picked up grid penalties for failing to follow the instructions. However, during FP2 in Abu Dhabi, this was pushed to the extreme by Max Verstappen.

The reigning world champion, impatient to get out for some track time, attempted to overtake multiple cars in the pit lane. This prompted the FIA to step in once again and ban similar moves outside of exceptional circumstances.

We cannot have these things and this stress. [Qualifying] used to be the best session of the weekend where the cars come alive, you drive these very fast cars. Now it’s the worst session of the weekend.

“For the teams, for drivers, for traffic management, for track limits, going to the stewards, not respecting the delta, impeding people, deleting the laps. We are all happy that is over and it shouldn’t be like that.”

However, it wasn’t only the new pit-exit rules that were causing stress for Alonso and Aston Martin. There was little separating the field in terms of performance at the Yas Marina Circuit on Saturday with eight of the ten teams making an appearance in Q3.

More F1…
