As England prepare for their final Euro 2024 qualifier away to North Macedonia, manager Gareth Southgate will be contemplating which players will be involved when the real action gets underway next summer.<\/p>\n
England have already secured their place at the finals in Germany and in some areas of the pitch Southgate has some tough selection decisions to make.<\/p>\n
Teams were allowed to name squads consisting of 26 players at the 2022 World Cup and Euro 2020.<\/p>\n
However, for this tournament the rules are set to revert to 23-man squads, with players such as\u00a0Raheem Sterling, Mason Mount and Reece James uncertain of their involvement.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Here, Mail Sport <\/span>assesses which players will be on the plane, who will be staying at home and who will be nervous about whether they will be selected.\u00a0<\/p>\n <\/p>\n England manager Gareth Southgate faces some major selection decisions ahead of Euro 2024<\/p>\n GOALKEEPERS<\/span><\/p>\n Jordan Pickford – On the plane<\/span><\/p>\n Heads to fourth major tournament as England\u2019s No 1. Could well go as No 2.<\/p>\n Nick Pope – Nervous<\/span><\/p>\n May be the one to benefit if Ramsdale drops out.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Aaron Ramsdale (left) is at risk of missing out, which could be of benefit to Nick Pope (right)<\/p>\n CENTRE-BACKS<\/span><\/p>\n John Stones – On the plane<\/span><\/p>\n One of Europe\u2019s most accomplished performers and key to a good tournament.<\/p>\n Harry Maguire – On the plane<\/span><\/p>\n Likely to partner Stones if he continues to play regularly at club level.<\/p>\n Marc Guehi – On the plane<\/span><\/p>\n Breathing down Maguire\u2019s neck for a starting spot. Emerging as a key man.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Marc Guehi is emerging as a key man for England and could be set for a starting berth<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Despite his ability, Fikayo Tomori isn’t guaranteed to be included in England’s Euro 2024 squad<\/p>\n Levi Colwill – On the plane<\/span><\/p>\n His ability to play centre back and left back will help his chances.<\/p>\n Fikayo Tomori – Nervous<\/span><\/p>\n A very able defender but hasn\u2019t asserted himself at the very top level.<\/p>\n Lewis Dunk – Nervous<\/span><\/p>\n Regained his place in squad due to fine Brighton form. There may be one too many centre backs ahead of him.<\/p>\n Ezri Konsa – Staying home<\/span><\/p>\n Will need injuries to make it on the plane to Germany in the summer.<\/p>\n Your browser does not support iframes.<\/p>\n FULL-BACKS<\/span><\/p>\n Kyle Walker – On the plane<\/span><\/p>\n Such a crucial part of the starting XI. Incredible to think he twice thought about international retirement.<\/p>\n Luke Shaw – On the plane<\/span><\/p>\n Hardly played this season due to injury but is now closing in on a return. Will start the first game if he is fit.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n It seems likely that Luke Shaw will start England’s first game of Euro 2024 if he is fully fit<\/p>\n Kieran Trippier – On the plane<\/span><\/p>\n Southgate calls him his warrior. Sets standards in training and is his manager\u2019s eyes and ears on the pitch.<\/p>\n Ben Chilwell – Nervous<\/span><\/p>\n May run Shaw close but has worries over fitness problems.<\/p>\n Reece James – Nervous<\/span><\/p>\n Another whose injury problems have cast doubt on his place. Needs a strong second half of the season.<\/p>\n Rico Lewis – Staying home<\/span><\/p>\n Will be a fixture in the England squad for the next decade and beyond but this tournament may come too early.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Reece James’ injury problems have cast doubt over whether he will be involved next summer<\/p>\n MIDFIELDERS<\/span><\/p>\n Declan Rice – On the plane<\/span><\/p>\n One of the first names on the team sheet. A leader who doesn\u2019t get enough credit for ability on the ball.<\/p>\n Jude Bellingham – On the plane<\/span><\/p>\n English football\u2019s golden boy will be the pin-up of Euro 2024. That won\u2019t change.<\/p>\n Conor Gallagher – On the plane<\/span><\/p>\n Southgate has spoken glowingly about his attitude. His leadership role at Chelsea has improved his game.<\/p>\n Mason Mount – Nervous<\/span><\/p>\n If he plays regularly at United then he\u2019s got a very good chance. But it\u2019s a big if.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Mason Mount, previously a key player for Southgate, faces a battle to be involved<\/p>\n FORWARDS<\/span><\/p>\n Harry Kane – On the plane<\/span><\/p>\n If England go far in Germany it will be because Kane is scoring goals and playing well. England\u2019s heartbeat.<\/p>\n Bukayo Saka – On the plane<\/span><\/p>\n Already an elite European attacker. Brilliant in attack but so committed to his defensive duties. Very popular member of the squad.<\/p>\n Marcus Rashford – On the plane<\/span><\/p>\n Struggling at United and looks grumpy, but his form for England has been excellent in the last year.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Although he is struggling for Manchester United, Marcus Rashford has impressed for England<\/p>\n Phil Foden – On the plane<\/span><\/p>\n This must be the time he makes his mark on the global stage.<\/p>\n Jack Grealish – On the plane<\/span><\/p>\n A subdued start to the season but the crowd-pleaser (below) will be crucial off the bench.<\/p>\n Callum Wilson – On the plane<\/span><\/p>\n Went to Qatar and even got on the scoresheet. Should be included if fit.<\/p>\n James Maddison – On the plane<\/span><\/p>\n As long as his recovery from an ankle injury goes to plan, he travels.<\/p>\n Eberechi Eze – Nervous<\/span><\/p>\n Brilliant player, but in an area England are blessed.<\/p>\n Jarrod Bowen – Nervous<\/span><\/p>\n Playing excellently for West Ham but again, there\u2019s plenty of competition.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Newcastle striker Callum Wilson should be included in the England squad if he is fit<\/p>\n Ollie Watkins – Nervous<\/span><\/p>\n Brings pace to England\u2019s attack. But can he maintain his excellent form?<\/p>\n Ivan Toney – Nervous<\/span><\/p>\n In many people\u2019s eyes the true understudy to Kane. But will have sat eight months out due to bet ban.<\/p>\n Raheem Sterling – Nervous<\/span><\/p>\n Many have theories as to why he has missed five straight squads.
