Max Verstappen has insisted that the Las Vegas Grand Prix circuit layout would be ‘a lot more fun’ if there were more high-speed corners. The existing track design features three long straights that all end with slow-speed sections.

The reigning world champion heads into the season’s show-stopper event having won 17 of the last 18 races in a record-breaking run, but Verstappen is still not totally satisfied with the direction the sport is heading in.

Red Bull’s star driver has been public with his criticisms of the event’s execution, and has now labelled the Grand Prix as “99 per cent show, and one per cent sporting event.” These comments mainly referred to the grand opening ceremony that kicked off the weekend on Thursday.

Discussing his feelings on the track layout, Verstappen told Autosport: “Yeah, not very interesting. It’s just not many corners, to be honest. I don’t know. I mean, it also will depend probably a bit on how grippy it is. Doesn’t look like it has a lot of grip but yeah, we’ll go with the flow.

But naturally already for me, a street circuit is not very exciting, especially with these new cars. They’re just too heavy. And especially also when you have low grip, that doesn’t help.

“Of course, it will be great driving through the Strip, but then the layout itself is not the most exciting, I think. An F1 car is a lot more fun with a lot of high-speed corners.”

Verstappen also made his feelings clear regarding his continued opposition to Liberty Media’s desire to turn Grands Prix into standalone shows and events, insisting that he will always voice his opinion if he opposes the direction in which the sport is heading.

More F1…
