Crystal Palace sporting director Dougie Freedman is in the frame to be part of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s £1.4billion revolution at Manchester United.

The former Scottish striker, who had managerial spells at Palace, Bolton and Nottingham Forest, has been in charge of the South Londoners’ recruitment since the summer of 2017

And his work there has caught the eye of Ratcliffe and, in particular, Sir David Brailsford, the former Team GB cycling supremo assisting the proposed overhaul of the United’s transfer and scouting department.

Confirmation of Ratcliffe’s long, drawn-out purchase of a 25% stake in the club is looming large. An official announcement is expected in the next week. And the billionaire British investor is promising an immediate end to the chaotic transfer policy at Old Trafford .

United have blown more than a billion in the last three years with little obvious improvement on the pitch to show for that huge investment. Reds current technical director John Murtough and football director Darren Fletcher look set to pay the price for costly mistakes.

Ratcliffe has already drawn up a short-list of preferred replacements – with former Southampton, Tottenham and Monaco man Paul Mitchell the early favourite. Ex-Liverpool pair Michael Edwards and Julian Ward are also possibilities.

However, the influence of Brailsford in is significant and he is pushing for Freedman, 49, to be be involved. The reputation of the Selhurst Park transfer supremo has soared in recent times following three exciting signings in Marc Guehi, Eberechi Eze and Michael Olise.

Ex-Chelsea Academy central defender Guehi cost £18m two years ago. He is now Palace skipper and has broken into Gareth Southgate’s England set-up. Meanwhile, winger Eze, a £17m buy from Queens Park Rangers 12 months earlier, has also become a full Three Lions international.

And French Under-21 ace Olise, who signed a new deal at the club last week, continues to look a bargain, having cost only £8.5m from Reading in July 2021.
