Marcus Rashford received a straight red card with Manchester United cruising against Copenhagen in the Champions League on Wednesday evening.

The forward went to protect the ball but landed his studs on the ankle of his opponent before a VAR check confirmed his fate in the first-half – with the hosts then reducing a two-goal deficit minutes later.

Having turned with the ball out of defence after Rasmus Hojlund's brace, his stuck out his foot to bend the leg of Elias Jelert. The out-of-form striker then threw his arms up in the air in disbelief at the decision, with Robbie Savage insisting on TNT Sports commentary that it was fully deserved.

To make matters worse for Erik ten Hag's side, who had been cruising, the hosts took only two minutes to make the extra-man count with vital points on offer.

Former Premier League man Mohamed Elyounoussi scored a fine goal to delight the home fans who brought a banner aimed at the recent struggles of their opponents.

Not long after, with more than 10 minutes added on before the break, Harry Maguire was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box.

Diogo Goncalves then sent Andre Onana the wrong way to level the scores of a game that United had been completely dominating.

Giving his thoughts on the red card, Jamie Carragher tweeted: "No way is that a red card for Rashford! Hate these slow motion replays & still images that make everything look 10 times worse."

A fan then disagreed by saying: "It's deserved red card it's an ankle snapper."
