Callum Wilson may have handed Eddie Howe yet another injury headache after being forced off the field prematurely against Borussia Dortmund.

The Magpies fell to a disappointing 2-0 defeat on the road in the Champions League, with Niclas Fullkrug and Julian Brandt on target for the German side as they made it back-to-back wins over Newcastle.

Although the visitors had threatened in the second half, it was an ultimately below par performance, characterised by a poor miss from Joelinton with the scores at 1-0 from close range.

Eddie Howe’s side came into the clash with seven first-team stars out of action already, but Wilson was hooked at the break for Anthony Gordon.

After the match however, Mail Sport’s Craig Hope reported that the player was taken off at the break as a result of feeling ‘tightness in his hamstring’.

To make matters worse, Alexander Isak is also out injured, with a groin injury, and is likely set to miss the remaining fixtures before the end of the international break at the end of this month.

Howe came into the game without Isak, Dan Burn, Matt Targett, Sven Botman, Elliot Anderson, Harvey Barnes and Jacob Murphy.

Furthermore, Bruno Guimaraes is suspended for their next Premier League clash, a game against Bournemouth on Saturday, with Sandro Tonali also suspended for betting breaches for the rest of the season.

The Magpies were unable to fill their bench as it was for the trip to Dortmund, with youngster Lewis Miley coming off the bench in the second half for Joe Willock, who was only just back from an injury lay off himself.

Speaking after the game, Howe indicated that it was as yet too soon to tell if the hamstring issue would be enough to rule the player out of Saturday’s Premier League trip to the South Coast.
