Liverpool are reportedly one of several clubs lining up a move for Napoli star Piotr Zielinski. The midfielder could become a free agent next summer having so far failed to come to an agreement over a new contract with the reigning Serie A champions.

Reports in Italy suggest that Liverpool could battle with West Ham for the experienced Poland international’s signature. Zielinski can discuss a pre-contract agreement with a non-Italian team from January 1.

That could hand Liverpool and West Ham an edge over Juventus, who are also linked with the player. Juve are seeking replacements for Paul Pogba and Nicolo Fagioli, with Pogba facing a potentially lengthy ban and Fagioli suspended for seven months.

Zielinski has long been linked with Liverpool, with Jurgen Klopp reported to be a fan of the 29-year-old. The Reds might be able to finally get their hands on a long-pursued target.

According to Corriere dello Sport, Liverpool are preparing to open talks over a move. It is claimed that Napoli could even be tempted to sell in January in order to recoup funds and prevent him leaving for nothing six months later.

Zielinski’s contract ends in the summer of 2024 but there has seemingly been little movement over an extension. Premier League clubs are now circling ahead of being able to shake hands over a pre-contract agreement in January.

Liverpool have made widespread changes to their midfield over the last few months. A lack of energy in the middle of the pitch saw Klopp’s side slump to a fifth-place finish last season, their worst showing in a full season under the German tactician.
