A former Olympic boxer who murdered his girlfriend and her unborn child has been handed two consecutive life sentences.

Felix Verdejo, who represented Puerto Rico at London 2012, had denied drugging pregnant partner Keishla Rodriguez before hurling her into a lagoon to drown in April 2021. Her body was discovered a few weeks later.

A court heard Verdejo, 30, had pressured Keishla into aborting their unborn child before he was convicted of kidnapping that leads to a death and one count of causing the death of an unborn child. During the trial, it emerged that Keishla told her mum Keila Ortiz she was meeting Verdejo at her home to tell him she was pregnant.

He arrived at her apartment with pal Luis Antonio Cadiz before Keishla climbed into his SUV. Prosecutors said she was then punched in the face and injected with an unknown substance (an autopsy determined that Keishla had fentanyl and xylazine, a sedative used for horses and other animals, in her system).

The court heard Verdejo and Cadiz then bound her hands and feet together with wires, tied her limbs to a cement block and threw Keishla off a bridge into the San Jose Lagoon. Verdejo then fired a gun at her as she fell.

The boxer made an anonymous phone call to the police a few days later to let them know where to find Keishla's body. He later handed himself in to the authorities.

Before handing down the sentence, the judge in the case said that Verdejo "ended the lives of two people in a horrendous way". He added: "The level of cruelty only added to the tragedy that led to these unfortunate events. Those lives, as well as those of the family, have been changed forever. There is no way to go back on this."

Keishla's mother, who had warned her daughter that Verdejo was dangerous, described the murder as "macabre". Speaking after the boxer's conviction in July, she said: "Justice was done for my daughter and my grandson, they did justice for both because they are two lives. This was a macabre murder."

Verdejo has a fight record of 27 wins from 29 professional bouts. He turned pro a few weeks after competing at the Olympics in 2012.
