A former Masters champion has revealed the secret to his success within golf – borrowing Tiger Woods’ clubs. Adam Scott secured what is to date still the only major championship of his career when he received the green jacket in April 2013. The Australian went on to become world No. 1 for 11 weeks a year later, but he has plenty to thank Woods for when it came to selecting the right kind of equipment for the job.

Scott, who also finished as runner-up at the 2012 Open Championship, has revealed how during his early golfing days, he got accustomed to playing with a set of clubs that belonged to Woods, before requesting a set of his own that would ultimately take him onto bigger and better things.

Speaking in an interview with Iona Stephen during her latest ‘On the road with Iona’ podcast, Scott explained how he ended up in possession of Woods’ clubs.

He said: “When I first turned pro I was using some Titleists and I was working at the time with Butch Harmon who was coaching Tiger at the time. I was out at his place and I was practising with Tiger’s backup set out of Butch’s office. I was hitting them really good.

“I asked Titlelist if I could have a set like that. There was kind of some pushback. This upstart from Australia asking for Tiger’s clubs.

“Butch let me take them to South Africa at the start of 2001 and I won my first tournament that year with that set of Tiger’s backup irons. So then I got a set made by Titleist. I used them for five and a half years, that one set. Looking back on it they were pretty special irons.”

When asked if Woods knew that Scott had taken his spare set of irons, the Australian said: “He did. Butch asked him, but he did get them back too.”
