Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp admitted that his side were “lucky” that Ibrahima Konate was not sent off during their 2-0 win over Everton in Saturday’s Merseyside derby, as he was not totally content with the performance despite victory against the Reds’ local rivals. Mohamed Salah’s brace sealed all three points against 10-men Toffees, but Klopp’s centre-back could also have been shown a second yellow for his foul on Beto.

Having already been on a yellow card for an infringement earlier in the game, Konate halted Everton’s counter when a through ball was sent for substitute Beto but he was clipped by the Liverpool defender – but referee Craig Pawson failed to brandish another booking despite noting the foul.

This came after the official had already given Everton’s Ashley Young his marching orders for two fouls on Luis Diaz, leaving the Everton bench frustrated as Sean Dyche and assistant Ian Woan both were booked themselves.

Klopp made the quick decision to substitute Konate off for Joel Matip immediately after he avoided a second yellow card, with the German boss perhaps admitting that they had gotten away with one against their local rivals.

After the match, Klopp pinpointed three opportunities in the first half as he was disappointed with his side’s lack of cutting edge. They were able to break at will but squandered several opportunities to take the lead and had to be rescued by Salah’s penalty.

When asked for his thoughts on the game, Klopp told TNT Sports: “Good, well deserved, I really think it’s a difficult game with a lot of emotions involved. Red card, maybe a second yellow for us, penalty. In the first half we had three really big opportunities which didn’t even end up as a shot on target – which is not cool.
