Frankie Dettori has signed off from 36 years in British racing with a winner on Champions Day.

Horse racing icon Dettori, 52, announced his intention to quit the sport earlier this year. However, he U-turned earlier this month and changed his plans, deciding instead to continue his career solely in America.

Dettori's farewell to the UK racing scene reached its crescendo at Ascot on Saturday, the home of his infamous Magnificent Seven in September 1996 when he went through the entire seven-race card. And he gave a raucous crowd the winner they so dearly craved as he began Champions Day with a winner on board Trawlerman.

Frankie had Trawlerman out the front for the majority of the race and fought of a stern challenge from favourite Kyprios to edge the spoils in the Long Distance Cup. He triumphed at odds of around 7/1 to the delight of the crowd.

"I will say goodbye to my fans and my beloved Ascot and a country that has been my life for all these years, but I have something more to look forward to," said Dettori before Saturday's action.

"I have no doubt that it's going to be an emotional day. For now my focus is on delivering the best possible performances for those who have shown me decades of support."

Dettori confirmed earlier this month that he would continue his career in America. He said: "I didn't expect this year to be so successful. I feel like I still have to get it all out of my system, so the obvious choice for me is to move full-time to America because I had such a good time there over the winter.

"I'm going to be based at Santa Anita but I'll also do a bit of stuff on the international scene in Dubai and Saudi Arabia when available."
