Your view: Will Schultz or Ginnivan kick more goals in 2024?

Good afternoon

G’day everyone. It’s Roy Ward here and I’ll be tapping the keys on our trade blog from now until the deadline arrives and we have all the moves locked in.

Please feel free to continue to leave comments in the blog.

Enjoy the hours to come, we should have some officials moves start trickling in after 2pm AEDT.

No appeal as Allen cops biggest suspension in AFLW history

Over in the AFLW, Adelaide premiership defender Najwa Allen has copped the biggest suspension in the history of the competition for a high bump on Western Bulldogs’ Kirsten McLeod, which left the Dogs player concussed.

The conduct was referred straight to the tribunal, which handed down a three-match suspension on Tuesday night, meaning Allen will miss the remainder of the home-and-away season.

It’s the equivalent of a 6-8 week ban in the men’s competition.

Today the Crows have confirmed their decision not to appeal the suspension.

Essendon, however, did appeal the one-match ban handed down to best and fairest winner Maddy Prespakis for a dangerous tackle on Richmond’s Sarah Hosking by the match review officer.

This was successful and the Bombers midfield star is free to play this weekend against West Coast.

Why Ginnivan has to go following the Schultz deal

As we wait for Jack Ginnivan’s trade to Hawthorn to be formalised, have a read of chief footy writer Jake Niall’s analysis of the premiership Pie’s impending exit.

When Collingwood emerged victorious from one of the AFL’s greatest grand finals, Craig McRae acknowledged some displeasure with Jack Ginnivan’s decision to go the races on the night before the grand final.

“Read the room, Jack,” said McRae, when asked if Ginnivan should have gone to the races. Just 16 days has passed since the grand final and this time Ginnivan has read the room. Unless there is another twist, he will be a Hawthorn player before the close of trades on Wednesday.

What Ginnivan has discerned is that the Magpies don’t want him in the room; certainly, he understands that the arrival of Lachie Schultz from Fremantle was a signal that he was no longer needed, and they were happy for him to explore his options – a reality communicated to Ginnivan and his management after the Schultz deal.

The key figure behind Billings’ impending move to Melbourne

Further to our earlier report on Jack Billings, the move is being driven by Melbourne footy boss Alan Richardson, who was Billings’ senior coach for his first six seasons.

The Dees and the Saints will have to come to an agreement on who pays what of Billings’ salary. The Dees’ salary cap is tight.

‘Nothing too crazy from me’: Ginnivan’s finals promise

With Jack Ginnivan on the way out of Collingwood, I thought it’d be worthwhile to read through Peter Ryan’s excellent interview with him during the finals series detailing the wake-up call he received from the Magpies coaches.

This quote stood out for me: “Everyone knows how far is too far, I guess, and how if you do something that is too crazy it can hurt your footy and have a bit of a backlash. There will probably be no blond hair for a while, and nothing too crazy from me.”

I don’t reckon anyone would have had the Moonee Valley night races the day before the grand final classified as “too crazy” – but here we are.

EXCLUSIVE: Billings ‘good chance’ to join Dees

Jack Billings is a good chance to land at Melbourne.

Work is being done behind the scenes that could well see him in the red and blue next year. Billings, the No.3 pick in 2013, has been looking for another club and has two years to run on a contract he signed as a free agent in 2021, with Melbourne quietly in talks. It will not be for a high pick.

It’s unclear how much of the contract Melbourne would pay.

Dogs ruck still wants a move

There’s been no late change of heart from Western Bulldogs ruckman Jordon Sweet, even with Ivan Soldo going to Port Adelaide.

Sweet is still keen to return to South Australia to play for the Power after being starved of senior opportunities at the Dogs, behind Tim English.

Ginnivan to be a Hawk

Jack Ginnivan will be in brown and gold by the end of the day.

The Collingwood premiership forward has agreed to a trade to Hawthorn. The Pies and Hawks are working through a deal now, but a swap of future second-round picks is the centrepiece with other late picks thrown in.

The record of a premiership team never playing together again stands.

Nothing will be announced officially until 2pm (AEDT) at the earliest when trades can be processed.

Trades brought forward

We have some good news for you. The wait for a trade to come through has been cut by an hour. The AFL has announced it has brought forward the processing of trades by an hour to 2pm (AEDT), from 3pm. The deadline is still 7.30pm.
