Aussie cricket great Adam Gilchrist has revealed the details of a wild night out in Cape Town in 2006 with Shane Warne that ended with Matthew Hayden nude on top of a cable car as it travelled up a mountain.

The Australians had just taken a 2-0 lead in a three-match series against the Proteas and someone had the idea to sing the team’s song ‘Under The Southern Cross I Stand’ at the top of nearby Table Mountain.

The only drawback was getting up to the top of at night when the cable cars weren’t running.

‘We got a bus, Warnie made a few calls, it was about midnight,’ Gilchrist told ‘Browny’s Podcast’ with Campbell Brown.

‘The cable car that goes up the Table Mountain in Cape Town – for those who’ve been there, it’s stunning – but it’s midnight, it’s all shut down.

Adam Gilchrist (pictured right with Shane Warne) has spilled the bean on the Aussie team’s out-of-control celebrations after a win in South Africa in 2006

Shane Warne organised a cable car to take himself, Gilchrist (pictured) and Matthew Hayden to the top of Cape Town’s world-famous Table Mountain at midnight

‘Warnie, couple of phone calls, next minute, the operator’s up there cranking up the big cable car.’

Hayden then decided to take off all his clothes and climb onto the roof of the cable car as it was moving.

His teammates decided to follow him up there and pretty soon the whole team were on top of the car.

‘We go up, but not in the cable car – on top of it, which is ridiculous, we were all hammered. Ridiculous,’ Gilchrist said.

Campbell Brown asked: ‘Not secured?’

Gilchrist replied: ‘Nah. There was this one little wire [protecting us].

‘And Haydos was prone to a nude bomb occasionally – naked, Matty Hayden just with the Aussie flag [draped around him], which wasn’t a great sight.’

Matt Hayden (pictured left celebrating an Ashes win) decided to strip naked and climb on the roof of the moving cable car

Several other members of the Aussie team (pictured after winning the Ashes in 2006) followed suit and climbed onto the roof with Hayden

Astonishingly, none of the players fell off and all managed to make it to the top of the mountain to sing the team victory song.

The team’s drunken escapades didn’t affect their performance on the pitch, either, as Australia went on to win the series 3-0.
