Manchester United flop Donny van de Beek could make a humbling return to the Eredivisie as he continues to be frozen out at Old Trafford. Ajax boss Maurice Steijn mentioned the 26-year-old by name as a player who could benefit his struggling side, and the Red Devils would surely jump at the chance to shift him from the wage bill.

Now into his fourth season as a United player, Van de Beek has made only 35 Premier League appearances, scoring two goals. The midfielder’s measly return pales in comparison to the numbers he put up at Ajax, where he hit double figures across all competitions in three consecutive campaigns before his £35million switch to England.

Even the appointment of Erik ten Hag – with whom he worked at Ajax – has failed to kick-start Van de Beek’s stint with the Red Devils. And with only two substitute appearances to his name this term, the out-of-favour star may consider his options in January.

Reports indicated that United were frantically trying to offload Van de Beek during the summer, in a venture which involved offering him to Turkish clubs after the English window had closed.

Steijn is on the brink after making a dreadful start to his managerial stint, and he claims that Van de Beek is the kind of player who could lift the Amsterdam giants out of their current predicament.

“I look at the teenagers who can offer more than the players on the bench,” he said. “Some senior players are not yet able to bring it in training and during substitute appearances.

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. But I make different choices based on what I see in training and what I think the team needs. Of course, this team would benefit incredibly from experienced players, such as Matthijs de Ligt, Frenkie de Jong, Donny van de Beek. Daley Blind and Dusan Tadic also excelled. We don’t have those guys, and that is a disadvantage for the team.”

It remains to be seen whether Ajax attempt to put together a swoop for their former midfield maestro when the transfer window swings back open in January.

Van de Beek scored an impressive 41 goals in 175 first-team games for the serial Eredivisie winners, helping Ten Hag and his team-mates on a blockbuster run to the Champions League semi-finals in 2018/19.

Ajax are in a wholly different position at present, sitting 16th in the table after picking up just one win in Steijn’s first six league matches.
