Tottenham midfielder James Maddison may have reopened a can of worms after teasing Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold in the England camp.

The two reunited on international duty less than a fortnight after each bore witness to one of the Premier League's biggest VAR controversies. The Reds came off second best in north London and lost 2-1 to Spurs after officials admitted to wrongfully ruling out a Luis Diaz goal, leading to Jurgen Klopp calling for the match to be replayed.

And just when it appeared as though the hysteria over the incident was dying down, Maddison was on hand to make light of the whole situation. Of course, that's always easier when one's club came out on the winning side.

While many might prefer to move on and like to pretend the drama never happened, Maddison proved that's no priority of his after reconnecting with Alexander-Arnold. And the Spurs star preferred to make a jab at his international team-mate as a method of healing.

Maddison uploaded a picture to his Instagram stories showing him and the Liverpool right-back together in the gym. However, the post contained a caption reading 'still asking for a replay', alongside several snoring and laughing emojis.

The post is likely to have ruffled the feathers of those Reds fans who may agree a replay is in order. However, Maddison is clearly in the camp content with the outcome at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on October 30 – and it's difficult to blame him.

Although the controversy won't disappear completely anytime soon, the initial mania has simmered after Liverpool felt they were denied at least a share of the spoils at Spurs. Klopp empathised with the officials but said that while the gaffe wasn't deliberate, it may still require unprecedented action to set the record straight.

"They didn't do it on purpose and we shouldn't forget that," said the German at the time. "Yes, it was a mistake. An obvious mistake. I think there would have been solutions. I think the outcome should be a replay. Probably won't happen.

"As far as I can remember, something like that never happened, that's why I think a replay should be played."

It was always bound to be a fierce talking point heading into the first England camp since that incident. The Three Lions will face Australia in a Wembley friendly on Friday before facing Italy in Euro 2024 qualifying four days later.

Luckily for Gareth Southgate, Maddison and Alexander-Arnold are the only players in his latest squad from Tottenham and Liverpool's squads, respectively. That being said, the former may be a big enough voice on his own to ensure the matter of a replay remains a conversation piece during the international break.
