Manchester United icon Wayne Rooney is reportedly on the verge of taking over at Birmingham after the Championship club sacked John Eustace on Monday, despite having the Blues in the play-off places. Various reports have placed Rooney as his successor, after parting ways with MLS side DC United, and he may have one eye on his former club in the January transfer window. Express Sport looks at four United wonderkids that Birmingham and Rooney could take on for the remainder of the season.

Amad Diallo shone in the Championship for Sunderland last year, scoring 13 goals for Tony Mowbray’s young side to take them to the play-offs. That included a stunning free-kick from range in the semi-finals, but it was not enough to get past eventual play-off winners Luton.

He had been earmarked for a role at United this season to stake his claim for the right-wing spot, but suffered a knee injury during pre-season that has since required surgery. Amad may opt to return to the Championship on loan for the second half of the season to prove his fitness in a division he knows well, and Rooney’s Birmingham could be the perfect landing spot.

JUST IN Sheikh Jassim ‘offers Man Utd job to David Beckham’ in new ploy to oust Glazers[TAKEOVER]

Competing for the same role as Amad, Facundo Pellistri had a small window of opportunity during Antony’s leave of absence while Jadon Sancho continued his public spat with Erik ten Hag – but the Uruguayan seemingly failed to make the necessary impression on the head coach as Bruno Fernandes has since filled that role instead.

A January loan to Birmingham could help Pellistri showcase his talents on a regular basis and return next season full of confidence, having spent 18 months at Old Trafford struggling to win over Ten Hag.

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. More info

Don’t miss…

Shola Shoretire is another youngster that Ten Hag has overlooked so far this season, as the 19-year-old has failed to play a single minute of senior football. However, he did impress on loan at Bolton in League One in the second half of last season, to such an extent that the Manchester Evening News claimed that there were offers from Championship clubs this summer to take the midfielder on loan.

That move failed to materialise and he has been captaining the under-21s this season but after a taste of first-team football with Bolton, Birmingham could provide the next platform for the talented teenager.

Hannibal Mejbri has made a few cameo appearances for United but with Casemiro, Mason Mount, Sofyan Amrabat, Christian Eriksen and Scott McTominay all now fit – and Kobbie Mainoo set to return, the Tunisian’s options look increasingly limited.

Coincidentally, the 20-year-old spent last season on loan at Birmingham and was a fixture in the midfield. Having become a fan favourite during his time at St Andrews’ he may be receptive to another spell in the Midlands, getting the chance to work under one of United’s icons in Rooney.

Watch one of the biggest crossover fights of the year on DAZN as KSI and Logan Paul face off against the opponants in Manchester on October 14th.

It costs £20.99 and you also get to enjoy DAZN for the rest of the month for just £1 thanks to a special deal.

The Pay-per-view costs £20.99 and you’ll be able to enjoy all the action on the night.

Amad Diallo
