England manager Gareth Southgate also faces a headache at left-back as both Chilwell and Luke Shaw will be absent for his side’s upcoming Euro 2024 qualifier against Italy.

When asked about the extent of Chilwell’s injury on Friday, Pochettino said: ‘Bad news.

‘The doctor told me is it is a bad injury but we need to assess in the next few days.

Burnley (A) – Oct 7 ‘It doesn’t look good. We are very sad about the news about Ben. It’s difficult to know [when he will return]. We need to assess in the next few days.

‘The doctor will tell us and the club will communicate. Yes [it’s the same leg as last season]. I think so. It’s the mechanism of the action. He was a little bit unlucky in the way he suffered the injury. It’s very sad because he was having a very good game.’

For more stories like this, check our sport page.

Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
