Jose Mourinho has told Inter Milan they have ‘no reason to be angry’ with Romelu Lukaku after the Belgian striker opened his account for Roma.

Lukaku, who is spending the season there on loan from Chelsea, netted Roma’s sixth goal in a 7-0 thrashing of Empoli at the Stadio Olimpico.

Mourinho previously worked with Lukaku at Chelsea and Manchester United, and will hope to revitalise the 30-year-old’s career after he was cast out at Stamford Bridge and had a largely unhappy reunion with Inter last season.

‘He’s happy. Romelu needs to feel loved, wanted, and he understood that the team needed a player like him,’ Mourinho told DAZN after the win.

‘At Inter, they have no reason to be angry – they should be happy for their former manager, who needed Romelu.’

Mourinho added: ‘For me, it wasn’t important whether Lukaku scored or not but perhaps it was for him. He has always shown that he wants to make himself available.

‘Then the fact he scored under the Curva made his evening perfect, but we still have to learn to play well with him, and he with us.

‘We need time to work and there is little of it.’

Paulo Dybala scored two of Roma’s seven goals, with Renato Sanches, Bryan Cristante and Gianluca Mancini also on target. Their third was an own goal by Alberto Grassi.

It was Roma’s first Serie A win of the season after losses to Verona and AC Milan, plus a draw with Salernitana.
