Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson has been taken ill and won’t be in charge of the Eagles’ game against Aston Villa today, Palace have confirmed.

Hodgson, 76, will not be at Villa Park today, Palace confirmed his absence in a statement, saying:

“Unfortunately Roy Hodgson was taken unwell earlier today and is not at Villa Park. Roy is in contact with Paddy McCarthy, who will take the team today assisted by Ray Lewington.

Hodgson had retired from football at the end of the 2021/22 season but he returned to Selhurst Park at the end of the 2022/23 season as a replacement for Patrick Vieira, who had been sacked following a poor run of form.

The former England boss joined on a temporary basis but after guiding Palace to safety by winning five of his 10 games in charge, he signed a one-year contract with the club this summer to stay in a permanent role.

Palace have begun the season strongly and currently sit in 7th place heading into Saturday’s trip against Villa following two wins, one draw and one loss from their opening four games of the campaign.

It’s currently unclear what illness has prevented Hodgson from taking charge of his 397th Premier League game as manager this afternoon.

Former Palace captain McCarthy will take charge of the team at Villa Park as the Selhurst Park hero steps up from the assistant manager role. Lewington, who is a trusted ally of Hodgson after holding various assistant roles under him, will also step up his involvement.

Palace fans sent messages of support to their gaffer on social media, with one fan tweeting: “Get well soon Boss.”
