Sabalenka, who won the US Open doubles final in 2019, took the opening set in New York but was ultimately dispatched by the American teenager.<\/p>\n<p>Sabalenka has been in inspired form this year and landed her first ever Grand Slam trophy in January as she won the Australian Open. She backed that up with semi-final runs at the French Open and Wimbledon before booking her place in the US Open final after overcoming Madison Keys in the last four.<\/p>\n<p>Sabalenka attacked her opponent\u2019s forehand in the early stages of the showpiece event and, despite both players struggling to hold serve, the Belarusian took the opening set 6-2. But Gauff hit back and made the most of her excellent footwork and movement to win the second 6-3. And the 19-year-old eventually had too much for Sabalenka as she wrapped up the third set 6-2 to secure the victory.<\/p>\n<p>Sabalenka was clearly disappointed with her capitulation in the US and decided she had had enough of her racket in the aftermath of the contest as she was seen throwing it into a bin away from the court. I&#8217;m really proud of myself that all those years I have been working so hard helped me to become world No 1. But you know for me it&#8217;s more about end the year as world No 1, not just become world No 1 and then next week you&#8217;re second.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s good so that I can say I have been world No 1, but I really would like to finish the year as world No 1.
