Mercedes drivers Lewis Hamilton and George Russell are both in agreement on the changes that the Silver Arrows need to make to their car in order to compete with Max Verstappen at the top of the grid. The Red Bull star is coasting to a hat-trick of world titles, but the two Brits are hoping that next year they can put an end to his dominance.

Hamilton and Russell have not been afraid to criticise their own team’s decisions this season, with the seven-time world champion doing so at the Dutch Grand Prix and in Bahrain, while the junior driver insisted that Mercedes’ “totally wrong” information hindered him at Zandvoort.

The Silver Arrows sit second in the Constructors’ standings, despite Hamilton and Russell sitting fourth and seventh respectively among the drivers. But Russell is optimistic ahead of the 2024 season and opened up on the one area of the car that both he and his team-mate have identified needs some improvement.

When asked by PlanetF1 what was on his wishlist for Mercedes’ 2024 car, Russell replied: “I think something we’ve been trying to improve a lot is just the through corner balance of the car. I think both Lewis and I are searching for a bit more confidence and rear end in the car so that we can hit the ground running during a race weekend.

Allowing their drivers lap one of the weekend to go out push to the limit and in little fear of crashing the car or spinning out.

“So that’s something where we’re targeting, just improving that balance. But there’s always marginal gains in many areas. If you can find half a tenth here, half a tenth there, suddenly, you can add that up to a large chunk of lap time. That’s just what we’re working for at the moment.”

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. But you know, we saw Red Bull catch Mercedes in the Mercedes era in 2021 and that was sort of unforeseen as well as 2020 from Mercedes was a really dominant year. Then in 2021, Red Bull starts with the quickest car.

“We’ll be pushing for that but we’re not going to put any huge expectations on next year. We will sort of take it race by race, making sure we get all of the right information to make the best decisions possible between now and the Bahrain test next year.”

Watch all the live F1 action on NOW TV for just £12 for a day.

You can enjoy Premier League, Sky Bet EFL and more thanks to Now’s Sports membership.

You can also subscribe for a month that costs £26 a month.
