Manchester City have already got their next Sergio Aguero at the club after pulling off a bargain signing last summer, and now Pep Guardiola has his sights set on a player who could fill Pablo Zabaleta’s shoes. Reports suggest the Premier League champions are in pole position to land their next talent from South America with a move for Boca Juniors defender Valentin Barco, who is in high demand and subject of interest from several clubs in Europe.

City are battling with Brighton and Juventus for the signature of the £8million-rated left-back, who has shone since making his debut for the Argentinian giants in 2020 at the age of just 16.

Barco is regarded as an exciting talent in his homeland and, according to the Daily Star, Pep Guardiola’s side are now ‘likely’ to complete a deal for the 19-year-old in January.

Etihad chiefs had discussed a move towards the end of the summer transfer window but the parties ran out of time to finalise an agreement. Still, Barco would have likely remained with Boca until the end of the season anyway to continue his development, with City in no rush to integrate him into the squad.

He has found the net 19 times in 55 appearances, as well as laying on assists for Erling Haaland and his other colleagues.

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. Patsy is the club’s director of football based in South America and he has consistently unearthed talent in the region, from Alvarez to Gabriel Jesus back in 2016.

Patsy also wanted the club to sign Enzo Fernandez before he joined Benfica, with the World Cup winner later signing for Chelsea in a then-British record £107m transfer in January.

The treble winners signed Maximo Perrone from Velez Sarsfield last summer in an £8m deal on Patsy’s recommendation, and the 20-year-old has already made his first-team debut under Guardiola.

He will spend this season on loan to gain first-team experience with La Liga outfit Las Palmas.

And Barco could be the next in line to join them in wearing the sky blue shirt once City make an official bid, with the youngster then set to join up with his new team in the summer of 2024.
