Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney swam through all the levels of putrid play in Thursday night’s 21-20 loss to the Detroit Lions.

The 24-year-old former first-round receiver symbolized the struggles of the K.C. receiver corps, dropping three passes, one of which went for a game-changing Lions touchdown, and caught one ball for one yard on five targets. Add in a run for -1 yard, and Toney ended the excruciating night with more drops (three) than touches (two for 0 yards).

Despite the wideout’s woeful performance, quarterback Patrick Mahomes said he still has faith in Toney, noting the receiver missed time in training camp that could have contributed to Thursday’s issues.

“I have trust in KT. He missed a lot of training camp,” Mahomes said, via the team’s official transcript. “Obviously, he wanted to play and fought in rehab hard so he could play. Stuff is not always going to go your way, obviously, he would have wanted to catch a few of those in the game, but I have trust that he is going to be the guy that I go to in those crucial moments and he’s going to make the catch and win us some games like he did last year and get him more and more reps. I’m sure that those drops will disappear.”
