The Kansas City Chiefs will raise a Super Bowl championship banner for the second time in three years tonight as the AFC West franchise begins to run the gauntlet toward another Lombardi Trophy and further immorality.

Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, under the instruction of Andy Reid, form a near-unstoppable three-headed offensive monster but what awaits them is uncertainty – both within the organization and on the outside with many desperate to halt a more fashionable iteration of the Patriots dynasty.

The wolves await both in the conference and division; a revamped Denver under Sean Payton, a Los Angeles Chargers team with a head coach on NFL death row and the perennially chaotic Raiders.

Joe Burrow’s Bengals, Josh Allen’s Bills, Trevor Lawrence’s Jags, and maybe even Lamar Jackson’s Odell Beckham Jr.-boosted Ravens will all be hunting the Chiefs, too.

But before the wolves arrive, the Lions are prowling. Forgetting Aaron Rodgers’ arrival in New Jersey, Detroit have been the most trendy team in the National Football League this offseason.

Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs are favored to go back-to-back and win another Super Bowl

Jared Goff has experience in a shootout against Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs

Andy Reid is eyeing his third Super Bowl and to be the first team to go back-to-back since ’05

The Lions may not care for the newfound attention and media interest but there are expectations for this team to take control of an up-for-grabs NFC North and establish itself as a legitimate playoff team capable of chaos.

A run of eight wins in its last 10 games, including comprehensive wins vs. Jacksonville, Minnesota and the New York Giants, has made Detroit fashionable again. It’s also left pundits and fans alike wondering what this season could hold for Dan Campbell’s men.

So much so, the Lions have the 9th best odds to win the Super Bowl and 4th best to be NFC champs.

Naturally, there is more certainty in what the Chiefs will bring. As usual, its offense will jump through the television, even if its weaponry on the outside isn’t what it once was.

Two years ago, K.C. said goodbye to Tyreek Hill and this offseason the same with Juju Smith-Schuster. They survived post-Hill and one would imagine Smith-Schuster will be replaced in a similar, if not easier, vein.

Eight of its offensive starters have returned for the 2023 season with LT Orlando Brown Jr. replaced by free agent signing Donovan Smith, with former Jags star Jawaan Taylor likely on the other side.

As was exposed in the Super Bowl, Kansas City’s weakness – as it has been for years – lies on the defensive side.

Challenges to its place atop the pro football mountain could very well come from within. Currently, there is a 310lb problem quite capable of swinging the AFC pendulum into the favor of Cincinnati and Co.

All-Pro d-tackle Chris Jones had 15.5 sacks in 2022 but is holding out amid a contract dispute

The Chiefs will face tough obstacles if they are to win the AFC, including the Bills and Bengals

A defense which is already weak as a pass rushing unit will be without all-world defensive tackle Chris Jones, who is holding out for a markedly improved contract.

Jones was asked last month on X when he would return to the Chiefs, to which he replied ‘Week 8.’

There is optimism the 29-year old, who had 15.5 sacks last season, could return much earlier but it seems extremely unlikely he will play in the imminent weeks, at least.

Jones – a four-time All-Pro and Pro Bowler – is in the final year of a four-year, $80million contract where he has a base salary of $19.5m for 2023.

Though the former Mississippi State star is reportedly seeking a contract which would make him ‘at least the second-highest-paid player at his position’, per The Athletic.

Jones’s average annual salary makes him the ninth-highest paid of all d-tackles. Aaron Donald and Quinnen Williams sit first and second at $31.6m and $24m, respectively.

Williams had a brief holdout of his own this offseason before agreeing to a four-year, $96m – $66m guaranteed – deal.

If Kansas City are to return to the Super Bowl a year after winning it all – as they did in 2021, they must navigate a schedule including its divisional opponents, in addition to the AFC East, Cincinnati and a rematch with Philadelphia.

Despite road games at the Jags and Jets within the first month, the first half of K.C.’s schedule is rather workable.

The Chiefs face tough road games against both the Jets and Jaguars in the opening four weeks

After an impressive finish to 2022, Dan Campbell and Detroit have become a trendy franchise

While games vs. the Dolphins, Bengals, Eagles and Bills come in November and beyond — all of them are in Arrowhead.

The Chiefs went 9-1 at home last season – including the playoffs – losing only to Buffalo 24-20 back in October.

With No. 15, No. 87 and the man with the mustache on the sidelines, it is hard to think Kansas City will not decide the fate of the Lombardi Trophy one way or another.

While it is far too early to fantasize whether Mahomes can turn his two Super Bowl rings into seven that Tom Brady has.

Yet, in his seventh season, Mahomes has as good a chance as any to make it three. But first, there’s Detroit to deal with.
