Dan Evans won a set and the American crowd, but could not stop brilliant Carlos Alcaraz taking a big step to retaining his US Open title. And on this blistering form, only Novak Djokovic can stop the Wimbledon champion winning his third Major next weekend.<\/p>\n
British No.2 Evans played superbly and showed huge courage to fight back and win the third set with\u00a0the support of the packed crowd in the Arthur Ashe Stadium.<\/p>\n
But the world No.1 combined blistering ground strokes with a deft touch around the net to win 6-2 6-3 4-6 6-3 in three hours and 10 minutes.<\/p>\n
On a long highlight reel of stunning shots, Alcaraz produced an unbelievable running forehand pass to break to lead 4-2 in the fourth set which saw gobsmacked Evans throw his racquet into the net in frustration.<\/p>\n
But this entertaining third round match was played in a great spirit between two players who had played golf together during Wimbledon.<\/p>\n
In the first set, a fan dropped a ball which sailed into the crowd and he stood up and drank his beer as punishment. As the image appeared on the Jumbitron, both players started laughing.<\/p>\n

He hit nine winners in the first two sets and 10 in the third as he took his fifth set point – just moments after smashing his racket in frustration – when Alcaraz framed a forehand service return out of the court.\u00a0<\/p>\n Alcaraz broke the Evans serve for a sixth time with his amazing forehand winner to lead 4-2 before taking his first match point minutes later with his 61st and final winner of the day.<\/p>\n
