Manchester City have reached a verbal agreement with Wolves for Matheus Nunes worth £47million.

City youngster Tommy Doyle will move to Molineux on loan in a separate deal that includes a £5m option to buy.

Wolves rejected the Premier League champions’ initial bid of the same figure, prompting Nunes to stay away from training as he attempted to force through a move.

After Wolves’ 5-0 win over Blackpool in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday, boss Gary O’Neil said he still expected Nunes to be at the club after the September 1 deadline, but the reality was that Wolves were always open to a deal in the region of £60m.

The Molineux club are now confident the final arrangement will be worth this sum and the matter was expected to accelerate on Wednesday.

Tommy Doyle enjoyed a successful year on loan in the Championship with Sheffield United

City were prepared to pay West Ham about £80m for Lucas Paqueta before the move was called off and Wolves valued Nunes similarly highly.

Although Nunes performed well only in patches last season, he still attracted interest from Liverpool and Wolves have always been confident they would be able to turn a profit on him following the £38m deal with Sporting Lisbon in summer 2022.

And during Nunes’ days with Sporting, City boss Pep Guardiola described him as ‘one of the best in the world today’.

Meanwhile, Wolves are hoping to make their first cash signing of the summer by completing an £8.5m deal for Girona defender Santiago Bueno.

O’Neil added: ‘I am excited for the next few days. I think we are well prepared. There has been some real good work that I have seen and I have helped with over the last couple of weeks so that we are able to do some bits and pieces and then respond if things move.’
