Khabib Nurmagomedov might have gone down as a legend with UFC fans and fellow fighters – but probably not in the eyes of the ring girls.
The destructive Russian retired in October 2020 as Lightweight champion, having won all of his 29 fights which included a dismantling of Conor McGregor. But the following year he faced a huge backlash amid his controversial comments on ring girls – and another UFC champion wasn't shy in taking aim.
'The Eagle' infamously described them as "the most useless people in martial arts," and questioned their value at combat sport events. He added: "These people are passing by and showing that it is the second round. But no one looks at the plate."

The star clearly irked Kyrgyzstan fighter Valentina Shevchenko, who remains the holder of the Women's Flyweight Championship belt. Shortly after Khabib's comments, she defended the title against Lauren Murphy in Las Vegas, winning via a fourth round stoppage.
And afterwards, 'Bullet' made a point of acknowledging the ring girls on her way back to the locker room, behaviour she was asked about in her post-match press conference. And her answer represented a clear dig against the man many consider the GOAT of UFC fighting.
"Beautiful women is a decoration of any event and I wanted everyone to know that," she said. "No one has (the) right to say they are useless because they are on the place where they have to be.
Was Khabib wrong with his views on ring girls? Let us know in the comments section.
"They were here at the beginning and it's like, you will come in any event and you will see beautiful women and as a man……well everyone, enjoys it. It's like beautiful right? It's a decoration, and this is my message. Beautiful women is a decoration of any event."
Indeed, Khabib is unlikely to get his wish anytime soon. The girls remain an integral part of UFC shows, with the likes of Red Dela Cruz achieving worldwide fame because of it.
Despite insisting he's done with the octagon, Khabib has consistently faced calls for return. Old rival McGregor, himself having not fought since August 2020 after breaking his leg against Dustin Poirier, has accused him of being 'scared' of a rematch.
