Khabib Nurmagomedov was offered $100m to take on Floyd Mayweather

Khabib Nurmagomedov could have followed in Conor McGregor’s footsteps and fought boxing great Floyd Mayweather, his manager has claimed.

Nurmagomedov retired from mixed martial arts last year after beating Justin Gaethje on the UFC's Fight Island.

The Russian ended his career unbeaten at 29-0, and has insisted he won’t return to the cage.

But now, it has emerged that Nurmagomedov nearly swapped sports and went over to take on fellow undefeated fighter Mayweather.

The American, who last fought competitively against McGregor in 2017 in a money-spinning fight, has been fighting exhibitions since that bout.

He will take on YouTube star Logan Paul on February 20th, and has been linked with a fight against Nurmagomedov before.

And ‘The Eagle’s manager, Ali Abdelaziz, has revealed that an offer of $100million (£73m) was on the table to make the fight.

UFC president Dana White was even ready to sign off on the bout, but it never materialised due to the difference in fighting disciplines.

“Listen, we got offered $100million to fight Floyd Mayweather,” he said to TMZ.

"Dana White was on board, everybody was on board. But, you know, Khabib is an MMA fighter.

"If Floyd wanted to come to fight, get his little a** whooped, no problem."

Nurmagomedov stated in the past that he has frequently been offered a bout against Mayweather, even in the build-up to his final fight against Gaethje.

He said: "Always, like every month people call me and they ask me, 'You going to fight with Floyd Mayweather if we pay you $100m.

"It's like crazy. I want to be focused on Justin Gaethje, please.

"Every month, some people from Saudi Arabia, from Emirates, from a lot of countries, like always try to make contract with me."
