Co-owner Rob McElhenney sent Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson an uplifting message – minutes after they’d been drubbed 5-0.
Wrexham’s National League title success under their Hollywood owners McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds was one of the stories of last season. However, the club’s long-awaited return to the EFL got off to a rocky start as they shipped five goals three times in the space of nine games.
In September, they were trounced 5-0 by Stockport, the club’s heaviest defeat for a decade. Many club owners, especially those who had spent heavily, would have been furious at such a result.

However, McElhenney, who had been following the game from his home in California, felt it was the right time to put a metaphorical arm around Parkinson’s shoulder. He sent him a message which read: “Phil, we are right behind you. We are right with you.”
McElhenney told The Athletic: “I sent that text before the final whistle. I wanted to make sure he knew, as soon as he got back to the locker room, that we had his back.

“It is easy to be supportive when things are great and things are all going to plan. It is easy to coast through on that, feeling the wind at your back and in your sails. But when you are going through adversity and you take a look around, you really see who your friends are.
“Everyone goes through those moments of adversity. No one’s life is a constant uptick. Those moments are important. You see who is really there for you when the chips are down.”
Wrexham have tightened up since then and are firmly in the League Two promotion shake-up. However, it hasn’t been plain sailing for the Welshmen, who were beaten 2-0 at Accrington Stanley on Saturday.
