Winners, losers and player ratings as Chelsea secure dominant win over Newcastle

Chelsea truly looked like title challengers as they eased to victory over Newcastle.

Frank Lampard's men were in cruise control as they wiped the Toon aside with thanks to an own goal from Federico Fernandez and Tammy Abraham.

In truth, Chelsea made harder work of the game than they would have liked.

The early lead, after Mason Mount's cross was bundled home at the back post by the unfortunate Fernandez, should have been much more comfortable with chances from Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech and Abraham going by the wayside.

But when Abraham fired home from Werner's lay-off in the second half, Chelsea's performance got the gloss it deserved.

So, who were the winners and who were the losers? Here's how we rated the performances…

WINNERS

Antonio Rudiger

It was a chance for redemption for Rudiger in the Chelsea team, with Thiago Silva unable to play, with Rudiger been given the nod as his replacement.

And he probably couldn't have done much more.

Yes, he will play against better strikers in the coming weeks if he keeps his spot – given Callum Wilson was missing for Newcastle – but this was a steady and composed performance. Frank Lampard will be pleased.

Timo Werner

It would be to say that Werner hasn't quite hit the heights expected of him so far this season since joining Chelsea. Has he been good? Yes. Has he been great? Probably not.

But the German came firing out of the blocks at St James' Park and twice looked like a serious threat down the left-hand side in the opening stages of the game – once forcing a stunning low save out of Karl Darlow.

He also nabbed the ball from Fabian Schar in the second half to leave Chelsea one-on-one, but fluffed his lines as he tried to square for Hakim Ziyech.

His unselfish nature did get its rewards when he laid up Tammy Abraham for the second goal.

It was one of those performances where every time he got the ball, it felt like something was going to happen.

Callum Wilson

It was tough to find a winner for Newcastle – and the only person probably happy was not even wearing a kit.

Wilson will be delighted to know that as soon as he is fit for action again, he will walk straight back into the Toon team.

Joelinton offered very little and it is alarming to see just how reliant Newcastle are on Wilson to provide them with a threat in front of goal.

Tammy Abraham

A third goal in three games.

You don't need to say much more than that. His place in the Chelsea strike force is becoming more settled every single time he plays.

It's going to be very, very hard for Lampard to drop him.

LOSERS

Allan Saint-Maximin

The thing with Saint-Maximin is that for him to be really effective, he needs the ball at his feet.

The thing with Newcastle was, well, they didn't have much of the ball.

Saint-Maximin's fire-cracker style could not be implemented on the match and as a result, Newcastle lacked creativity.

Chelsea did a sterling job in dealing with the threat offered by him. We doff our cap to Reece James.

Matteo Kovacic

An error in the first-half gave Newcastle a chance to try their luck from range and ultimately, he looked like the most dropable player in the Chelsea XI.

With Jorginho sat on the bench and Kai Havertz set to come back next week, just being OK is not good enough for a Chelsea midfielder.

Jamal Lascelles

Lascelles' centre-back partner Federico Fernandez might have been the obvious fit in the losers section after his first-half own goal, but he was trumped by Lascelles whse day turned into disaster.

He picked up a niggle in the first-half and limped through to half-time. He came out for the second half but before the whistle was even blown, waved over to the sideline and a substitute was made.

A major loss for Newcastle if he requires an extended break from action.

Christian Pulisic

It's going to be a waiting game for Pulisic to get back into the Chelsea team.

Ziyech was a little off his usual high standards, but Lampard clearly has faith in him. Werner and Abraham are impossible to drop based on current form.

Grab your coat, Christian. You're going to be on the bench for a couple of weeks.
