Wales fans react to 1-1 with USA at World Cup

As a footballer, Joe Rodon is probably used to being criticised for his performances with the Wales national team. But the Tottenham defender may not have expected a member of his own family to take apart his display during their 1-1 draw with the United States at the World Cup.

The centre-back was handed a start in their opening group fixture on Tuesday, making his debut in the tournament after Wales ended their 64-year wait to participate in the World Cup finals following their play-off victory over Ukraine in the summer.

It was far from a simple task for Robert Page’s side, though, as Wales found themselves under pressure for the majority of the first half and it was no surprise when Timothy Weah slid home from a Christian Pulisic to give the Americans the lead.

Rodon was singled out for criticism for pressing too high and leaving a hole in the Wales backline, which ultimately allowed Weah to run in behind the defence.

And his brother, Sam Rodon, could not resist the opportunity to mock his sibling’s display, suggesting that his brother was “on spice” – a colloquial reference to a person high on marijuana: “Think Joe was on spice first half but we take the draw,” Rodon’s brother wrote on Twitter.

The tweet was well-received on social media, with Scotland international Oliver McBurnie – Rodon’s former team-mate at Swansea – posting crying emojis in response.

Rodon did not enjoy his best game and nearly conceded an own goal early on, with Wayne Hennessey forced to tip away his header diverted towards his own net, and he was handed a poor match rating by some of the local press in Wales.
