Troy Deeney has revealed he had threatened to ‘injure every player’ at Watford as he pushed for a move away from the club in 2016.

The 34-year-old scored 140 goals for Watford in 12 seasons before leaving for Birmingham in 2021.

He made all of his Premier League appearances for the Hornets, but has now spoken of the extreme lengths he would have gone to to leave the club.

After Deeney played every game of the 2015/16 season and secured his best top-flight return of 13 goals, Watford were understandably keen to keep the striker at Vicarage Road.

Speaking to the Filthy Fellas podcast, Deeney claimed he gave the club a clear idea of how the next season would look if he was not allowed to leave.

‘I’ll come back fat as f***,’ he said, ‘and I will injure every player until you sell me. I promise you I will injure every player.’

With manager Walter Mazzarri still keen on hanging on to his star forward, Deeney arrived at the training ground, said goodbye to the staff and collected his boots.

‘I Go back to my car, and three minutes later my phone’s ringing’ he continued, ‘and they [Watford] are saying name your price, you can get it. And I was like, well let’s play then.’

He then called for some drastic changes at the club to keep him there, as he added:

‘At this point I was driving a Lamborghini Aventador, every time I came [to training] this speed bump was p****** me off.

The striker ended up staying at the club after making a number of outlandish demands

Deeney scored 10 goals the net season as Watford avoided relegation, although manager Walter Mazzarri (pictured) was still sacked in May

‘So I said can you take speed bump out please? You lot thought it was about the money, but I was already getting the money.

The 34-year-old also called for more space for his family and friends in the stands, as he said: ‘I’ve got one box, it’s only a 10 seater, so can I get two boxes? Knock the wall out, I want a bottle of Champagne every time, and they’re going “yep you can have that.”‘

Deeney signed a five-year deal that summer, and scored 10 goals the next season as the Hornets clung on to their Premier League status.

He saw out the contract before returning to Birmingham in 2021, where he has scored 11 Championship goals in the past two seasons.
