Trent Alexander-Arnold has dispelled the idea that England’s Liverpool players care more about their club than country.
And while putting that suggestion to bed, the Anfield ace revealed that his own international ambitions include being a future Three Lions captain.
Liverpool fans, rightly or wrongly, are often considered to have little allegiance to the national team. However, that does not ring true with Alexander-Arnold. Quite the reverse. He loves representing England.
Ahead of the World Cup qualifier against Andorra at Wembley, the Reds full-back, 22, said: “You get a lot more games for your club and most of your time is spent at your club so, of course, you have that affiliation and those strong feelings.
“But now I’m here I have the same feelings. Right now, I’m not thinking about what’s happening at the club, I’m thinking about what I can do to get into this team.
“What am I going to do if I get the opportunity to play. Things like that. I’m with England now and I’m trying to bring the best out of myself.”
Alexander-Arnold has had a mixed time on the world stage during 2021. Dropped in March, he regained his place only to be ruled out of the European Championships with a thigh injury sustained in the final warm-up game.
But that personal disappointment has done nothing to dampen his aspirations with England ahead of the World Cup finals next year – or that dream of one day wearing the armband.
