Transfer update: Latest on Ozil, Coman and Pelle
Tottenham could be set to miss out on the opportunity to sign Leicester City winger Demarai Gray for a nominal fee this month, according to reports. The 24-year-old has been linked with a move to the north London club in recent months amid speculation that he will leave the Foxes at the end of the season.
Gray’s deal is set to expire in the summer, which could see him depart the one-time Premier League champions with the forward reportedly reluctant to sign a new contract.
With the January transfer window now in full swing, he is able to speak with foreign clubs regarding a free transfer ahead of next season.
According to the Daily Mail, this development could see Spurs beaten to his signature by Marseille, who have moved quickly to open talks with his representatives.
Fellow Ligue 1 outfit Monaco and Portuguese heavyweights Benfica are also said to be interested.
Gray has played just once in the Premier League so far this season, coming off the bench during Leicester’s 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace at the end of December.

His only other first-team opportunity came in the form of a start in September’s Carabao Cup defeat to Arsenal.
A number of other clubs in England’s top flight have been linked with Gray during the months preceding the transfer window, with Southampton, Leeds United and Sheffield United among the sides mentioned in connection with the forward.
Journalist Duncan Castles claimed in November that Leicester were expecting the winger to join Spurs, but conceded that a move was not certain.
“I’m told that at Leicester they believe that he will be moving to Tottenham Hotspur,” Castles told the Transfer Window Podcast.
“My understanding is that there is an interest from Tottenham, but that is not a guaranteed deal. He has interest from other Premier League clubs, there is also significant interest from overseas.
“A decision will be made as to where the best opportunity to develop his career is going forward once he’s in a position to properly talk to the clubs.”
It remains to be seen whether Spurs will act quickly to land Gray before he is snapped up for free by a European side.
Leicester could be willing to accept a modest fee for his services, as the ongoing transfer window is likely to be their final opportunity to cash in on their man.
