Arsenal reportedly paid an eye-watering total of £24million for David Luiz's services this season.
The astonishing sum includes £6million in agent fees alongside the £8million the Gunners paid Chelsea for the Brazilian and his £10million-per-year salary.
Though Arsenal were praised last summer for signing the Champions League winner and bringing proven quality and experience to their defence, the transfer is being increasingly scrutinised.
Luiz, 33, has one year remaining on his deal and the Gunners could lose him during the transfer window to former club Benfica.
But the north London club's recruitment strategy has been called into question by their seemingly exorbitant outlay, reported by The Athletic, to bring him to the Emirates Stadium in the first place.
Luiz was bought as club captain Laurent Koscielny left for Bordeaux at the end of last season, but has struggled to string together a consistent run of quality performances.
And club legend Martin Keown slammed the decision to buy Luiz, questioning whether he is even a "proper defender".
He told talkSPORT : “David Luiz concerns me because if you’re going to pay £8m for him and give him £5m wages and he’s only going to be there for one season, I’m not sure about the wisdom of that.
“Is he a proper defender? Can he play in a back four? His best defending came when he was in a back three at Chelsea when they won the Premier League [in 2016-17].
“It’s the most crucial area which he [Mikel Arteta] has to get right.
“Holding’s been injured, it’s hard to judge him, he probably deserves another opportunity. I think that Sokratis could be a useful defender but I can understand the uncertainty of giving David Luiz a new deal.
