Tottenham winger Bryan Gil has been named as the new Spain U21 captain in a move which could please Harry Kane. Gil was one of Nuno Espirito Santo’s five signings during his first transfer window as head coach.

Spurs striker Kane attempted to pursue a move to Manchester City over the summer but ultimately remained at the club.

Chairman Daniel Levy was firm in his stance that the 28-year-old would not be sold, even though some reports suggested that he would be tempted by a £150million bid.

By staying, Kane culminated a largely successful few months for Spurs. It is quite a remarkable turnaround from the chaotic weeks following the end of the 2020-21 campaign.

Levy and the club’s director of football, Fabio Paratici, led a tumultuous search for Jose Mourinho’s permanent successor. Nearly three months passed between the Portuguese’s dismissal in April and Nuno’s appointment in June.

Kane enjoyed a good relationship with Mourinho but that was not reflective of the relationship Mourinho shared with many of his other players.

And the England captain implied that the now-Roma boss’ struggled at Spurs because of a lack of strong personalities in the squad.

“To be honest, that’s probably where it didn’t quite work out with Jose we didn’t quite have enough leadership that we needed at the time,” Kane told Gary Neville’s Overlap in May.

“Obviously, the club was in a difficult stage, with Mauricio getting sacked it’s never easy a new manager coming in.

“I think with Jose I had a great relationship with him, we got on from minute one. I think we understood each other.

“We had a similar mentality and how we saw stuff on the pitch, off the pitch and mentality in training so we kind of built that relationship.

“It’s a shame we couldn’t go on to win things but I’ve been lucky enough to work with Mauricio [Pochettino] and Jose. They’re two incredible managers [who have] only helped me in my career for sure.”

Gil’s arrival and his appointment as Spain’s U21s captain should, then, please Kane. It is evidence that Nuno has added to his squad a player with strong leadership qualities.

The 20-year-old was signed in a £25m deal from Sevilla and made his Premier League debut in the club’s 1-0 victory over Watford prior to the international break.

It was a transfer which saw the long-serving Spurs midfielder Erik Lamela move in the opposite direction.

Gil will captain his country’s youth team in today’s game against their Lithuania counterparts.

Meanwhile, Kane, who is currently with the England squad on international duty, pledged to remain with the North Londoners beyond the summer transfer window, despite strong interest from Man City.

The Three Lions captain is believed to have wanted to depart the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in pursuit of silverware.

He returned from an extended holiday following Euro 2020 to take part in each of Spurs’ three matches prior to the international break.

A brace against Pacos Ferreira helped Nuno’s side advance to the next round of the Europa Conference League.
