Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku has poked fun at himself despite scoring a brace on his Stamford Bridge homecoming on Saturday. Lukaku helped guide the Blues to a 3-0 win over Aston Villa to go level on points with Manchester United at the Premier League summit.

The 28-year-old opened the scoring on 15 minutes, receiving a brilliant long ball from Mateo Kovacic before sending Axel Tuanzebe the wrong way and slotting home with his right foot.

Kovacic doubled Chelsea’s lead in the 49th minute after latching onto a gift of a backpass from Tyrone Mings.

Lukaku added his second of the game in stoppage time, firing a ferocious strike past the helpless Jed Steer from near the edge of the area.

Despite his dominant performance, many viewers aimed jokes at the Belgium international after his opener due to a failed knee slide celebration.

After giving Chelsea the early lead, Lukaku wheeled away and kissed the badge several times in front of the fans.

Once he reached the corner flag, he attempted a knee slide with his arms wide but tumbled to the ground, much to the amusement of those watching.

Lukaku took to Twitter on Sunday morning to address his botched celebration, suggesting he’ll never attempt a knee slide again.

“No more sliding on my knees after yesterday’s celebration…” he wrote.

The prolific striker has scored three goals in his first three games since rejoining Chelsea in a club-record £97.5million deal from Inter Milan.

On a day where Cristiano Ronaldo marked his Premier League return with two goals, it was only fitting the Blues man responded in fine fashion.

Speaking after full-time, Lukaku praised Kovacic for his assist and explained that he had fulfilled his 11-year-long dream of scoring at Stamford Bridge.

“I was really emotional,” Lukaku told the official club website.

“I’ve waited since I was 11 years old for this, so it’s great. I enjoyed the moment, but now I just look forward to the next one.

“The coach asked before the game to play forward as fast as possible when we recover the ball.

“[Kovacic] is a player with a lot of qualities; we have a lot of players in the midfield who can have that forward pass.

“Today he gave me a brilliant pass, and I think the pass made the goal, and I was really happy.”
