Rapids re-sign Nicolás Mezquida to one-year deal with club option for 2023 – The Denver Post

The Colorado Rapids announced Friday they have agreed to terms with veteran midfielder Nicolás Mezquida.

Mezquida, 30, signed a one-year deal for 2022 with a club option for 2023. The veteran midfielder will occupy a supplemental roster spot, and is expected to play a role this season. Last year he appeared in 22 games for the Rapids and started six times, scoring twice and adding two assists across 652 minutes played.

General Manager Pádraig Smith was happy to complete the signing and believes the Uruguayan can still bring a lot to the squad.

“We’re delighted to welcome back Nico for the 2022 season,” Smith said in a club statement. “Nico has been an uplifting presence in our locker room and a versatile and energetic midfield piece since joining the club. He’ll provide important depth as we look to compete for trophies across several fronts this season.”

With the signing, the Rapids have now completed all pending transactions tied to the end-of-season moves in December. Of the 12 players whose contracts lapsed at the end of 2021, had an option on their contract exercised or had their options declined, the Rapids brought back five: Andre Shinyashiki, Mark-Anthony Kaye, Steven Beitashour, Drew Moor and now, Mezquida.

As a result of signing Mezquida to a supplemental roster spot, the Rapids will not be charged for using cap space.

Prior to his arrival in Colorado, Mezquida spent five years in Vancouver, where he had 17 goals and seven assists in 122 appearances, and has also played in Uruguay and Norway.

How to watch Rapids Saturday

The Rapids begin preseason play at 4 p.m. Saturday against Sporting Kansas City at Kino Sports Complex in Tucson, Ariz., in their Desert Showcase opener.

The game will be streamed live on the Rapids’ website (coloradorapids.com/live) and will only be available to residents within the club’s broadcast territory.

While the game will be played, it’s currently unclear which Rapids players are in camp, or how they will line up against SKC. Details have been sparse on social media channels, and the Rapids have not even released their preseason roster.

The Rapids will have a closed-door game against Seattle Sounders on Tuesday, Feb. 1, and will end the Desert Showcase next Saturday against Houston Dynamo at 5 p.m.
