Paris Saint-Germain players have been ‘unimpressed’ with Mauricio Pochettino’s tactical coaching since he came to the club, according to reports. Pochettino is strongly linked with the vacant Manchester United job following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. But this development may make United want to think twice about appointing the Argentine.

Pochettino became PSG boss in January after Thomas Tuchel’s dismissal.

He swiftly won the Trophee des Champions, his first piece of silverware as a manager.

But despite also winning the Coupe de France, his first campaign ended in disappointment.

They failed to win Ligue 1 for the first time since the 2016/17 season.

Speaking on the Transfer Window podcast, Duncan Castles claims the PSG players like Pochettino as a person.

But they are not as impressed by his tactics.

Castles said: “He is popular with the players in that extremely fractious and difficult dressing room, they like him as an individual, but they have been unimpressed by him as a tactical coach, contributing of course to them not winning Ligue 1 last season, where he handled the majority of the games after Qatar decided to sack Thomas Tuchel.”

Reports claim Pochettino is open to leaving PSG mid-season to take over at United.

However, the PSG players’ opinion on the 49-year-old adds to Darren Bent’s opinion that he is not an elite coach.

“I still don’t think he’s an elite manager,” Bent told talkSPORT.

“He’s still yet to be proven that he is an elite manager working with elite players.

“He’s still not found a way of getting Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe in the team consistently and playing well.

“Even though he came in half way through last season, he still managed to lose the French league.”

Bent is a fan of Pochettino but says he would be a risky appointment for United.

He added: “I like Pochettino, what he did at Spurs was fantastic, he made average players and turned them into better players, he developed some of the younger players down there.

“Some of the performances we were seeing from Spurs, the way they played, the press, it was really good to watch.

“As Danny was saying, he’s won the French cup, he’s going to win the French League but is still yet to convince me at the elite level.

“Can he go on and win the big, big trophies? That’s why it’s a risk because he hasn’t been there before.”
