‘The worst run in the history of football!’: Paul Merson slams Frank Lampard’s five-game losing streak at Chelsea – and tells Blues to appoint Mauricio Pochettino NOW
- Paul Merson has told Chelsea to appoint Mauricio Pochettino as their new boss
- Pochettino is in talks to fill the current managerial vacancy at Stamford Bridge
- Merson believes the Argentinian needs time to trim the club’s excessive squad
Paul Merson has told Chelsea to make Mauricio Pochettino their new manager as a matter of urgency with the club currently on the ‘worst run in the history of football’ under Frank Lampard.
Chelsea have lost their last five matches across all competitions, conceding nine goals and scoring just once in that period with Lampard in charge.
Their shocking Premier League form has seen the Blues drop to 12th in the top-flight standings, with their last win a 3-1 victory over Leicester on March 11.
Todd Boehly made the decision to bring Chelsea legend Lampard back to the dugout on an interim basis until the end of the season after previously terminating Graham Potter’s contract.
Ex-Spurs manager Pochettino is favourite to fill the Stamford Bridge vacancy after holding talks with Chelsea’s decision-makers, and Merson believes the club need to make the appointment now.

Frank Lampard has failed to win a game since taking over as interim Chelsea boss
‘He needs to get in lively,’ Merson told Sky Sports when discussing ongoing problems at Chelsea.
‘No disrespect to Frank, get in and sort out what he’s going to do next season.
‘You don’t want to get in there and see the players on July 1 and trying to sort it out.
‘Before you know it it’s August and you’re close to transfer deadline day and you’ve got five players you need to get rid of and then suddenly Chelsea are the busiest team on deadline day,’ he added.
‘I’m not exaggerating here but this is the worst run in the history of football. People will say some teams have gone 25 games without a win, but not with talent like that.
‘When you’ve got top international footballers and you can put out two teams like this I would have to say it’s the worst run in the history of football for the talent they have.’

Paul Merson believes that immediate change is required at Stamford Bridge
Chelsea will likely be looking to trim their ballooning squad in the summer after splurging over £600m on players in the last two transfer windows, handing long-term contracts to new arrivals, and breaking the British transfer record by paying £107m for Enzo Fernandez.
However, it is expected that despite ongoing negotiations, Lampard will keep his position at the helm until the end of the season.
One player that could leave Stamford Bridge is England international Mason Mount who has been linked with Liverpool.
Meanwhile, unfavoured striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could re-join Barcelona at the end of the season for free.
