Northampton have been relegated back to Sky Bet League Two after just one season following a 3-0 defeat to Blackpool.
The Cobblers were promoted after winning the play-off final at Wembley last June but inconsistency from February onwards made it difficult for them to stay out of the drop zone.
They would also have been down if they drew and Wigan avoided defeat at Hull, and they would have been relegated whatever happened in their game if AFC Wimbledon avoided defeat at home to Portsmouth, and Wigan beat the Tigers.
But their defeat means they return to the fourth tier of English football after their second relegation in four seasons.
