Fans have taken to social media to make jokes at Gary Neville’s expense after the pundit branded Spain toothless ahead of their World Cup opener.

Speaking on ITV before the game, the former Manchester United star questioned the attacking potency of Luis Enrique’s side: ‘It’s okay but there is no goals in it.’

Despite Neville’s comments, the 2010 winners of the competition ran rampant against Costa Rica in their group E debut, scoring seven times against their hapless opponents.

Gary Neville claimed ‘there is no goals’ in Luis Enrique’s Spain side before their World Cup opener against Costa Rica

The Euro 2020 semi-finalists then proceeded to set a World Cup record by smashing seven goals past their opponents

First half goals from Dani Olmo, Marco Asensio and a Ferran Torres penalty saw Spain take the initiative early before a second goal from Torres, and strikes from Gavi, Carlos Soler and Alvaro Morata completed the rout after the interval.

Following the result, Neville explained that the true test of Enrique’s side will come when they face the stronger opponents in their group.

‘We can’t just measure Spain at all of that,’ Neville said. ‘I know they play Germany on Sunday so I look forward to seeing them in that game.

‘Costa Rica are the first team in 32 years at a World Cup not to have a shot on goal. Forget the target, they have not had a shot on goal in the whole game.’

Despite not backing down from his comments immediately after the game, fans on social media were quick to point out just how wrong the 47-year-old had been.

Fans took to social media following the game to mock Neville for his ill-fated comments

@Biggies_MaIIs shared a video of Neville’s pre-game analysis with the sarcastic caption: ‘This is exactly why Gary Neville is the BEST pundit in the business. Absolute spot on here tbf.’

Another user added: ‘Gary Neville claiming there are no goals in this Spain team pre-game only for them to score 7. Poetry.’

Other fans online took aim at Neville’s failed stint in charge of Valencia, noticing the irony of the 7-0 scoreline after the La Liga club infamously fell to a seven-goal defeat to Barcelona in 2016 whilst under the stewardship of the former England international.

@Anderology wrote: ‘Bet this game is giving @GNev2 PTSD of his time at Valencia’

While another user shared a photo of Neville from the infamous defeat alongside the caption: ‘Gary Neville claiming there are no goals in this Spain team pre-game only for them to score 7.’

@Ben_Mattinson_ wrote: ‘He clearly knows nothing about Spanish football, he got flashbacks to his Valencia team that had no goals in it.’

But Neville took to social media to jokingly doubled down on his comments following the result

A further user wrote: ‘Gary I reckon your Valencia team could have put 7 past Costa Rica’

Spanish football journalist Guillem Balague playfully teased Neville following the result, writing: ‘It’s ok, @GNev2. I was thinking exactly the same before the game. What do we know!! Football, eh!’

But despite receiving torrent of mockery for his ill-fated comments, Neville jokingly doubled-down on his views in response, writing: ‘I think we will be proved right!’
