Mykhaylo Mudryk targeted by Arsenal fans with lasers and boos

Chelsea winger Mykhaylo Mudryk was targeted by Arsenal fans with lasers and boos as his side were left embarrassed during a 3-1 defeat at the Emirates. The 22-year-old penned an eight-and-a-half-year deal with the Blues in January after snubbing a move to London rivals Arsenal who had been keen to sign him for a long time.

Since signing for £88.5million the Ukrainian has struggled to build momentum after a promising debut against Liverpool in the Premier League. He was left on the bench against Arsenal until the 71st minute when he replaced Enzo Fernandez.

Unsurprisingly the Gunners gave Mudryk a hostile reception greeting him with boos and then a laser was shone on him in the final minutes of their 3-1 victory as he prepared to take a free-kick. Despite the pressure being on Mudryk, he had one of his better performances for Chelsea during his 24 minutes on the pitch, creating two chances.

After scoring even goals in 12 league appearances for Shakhtar Donetsk the 22-year-old was seen as a big January signing for the Blues beating their rivals to his signature. However, he is yet to score a single goal in 14 appearances across all competitions and still looks extremely raw.

Ex-Chelsea defender William Gallas has been one of those questioning if his former club are going to get value for money from the winger. He told Genting Casino: “Look at Mudryk! How many millions did he cost? As I said a few months ago, you need to give him time to settle and adapt to a new league and a new life but when you look at the chances that he has had to score, his finishing has not been of someone who costs that much money!

“There are so many problems at the club. The players are not performing. Most of them are not world-class players – Chelsea used to have a team full of world-class players. How many world-class players do they have? I would say two: N’Golo Kante and Thiago Silva.”

Already struggling to start games, Mudryk will be hoping that Chelsea don’t sign more competition for a starting place next season. Reports emerged last week that the Blues were considering a swap deal with AC Milan which would see Portuguese forward Rafael Leao come in with either Ruben Loftus-Cheek or Kalidou Koulibaly going out in return.

Arsenal icon Paul Merson is another critic of Mudryk and previously told Sky Sports: “They brought Mykhailo Mudryk for £88m and, bar a cameo of 20 minutes, he’s shown nothing. I mean nothing. You wouldn’t expect to need time to settle in at that price.”
