Jose Mourinho wasn’t a happy man in the summer when Manchester United failed to sign the centre-back that he was demanding.
The likes of Harry Maguire, Toby Alderweireld and Jerome Boateng were all linked with moves to Old Trafford, only for United to fail to snap up any of them.
That has led to Mourinho being critical of his side’s defending during their disappointing start to the season which has featured the concession of 17 goals in their 10 Premier League matches.
They did at least manage to get their goal difference back to zero with Sunday’s 2-1 win over Everton , where eyes were drawn to who Mourinho was chatting to before the game.
In a thinly-veiled dig at his own board, the Portuguese boss praised the Blues’ transfer business under Marco Silva, which included bringing in Yerry Mina, Lucas Digne and Andre Gomes from Barcelona.
"Incredible investment," said Mourinho when asked about the Blues’ summer.
"We knew the club would move in that direction, very good players, players from Barcelona.
"So that is the level which Everton wants to reach. Their ambitions are very similar to our ambitions."
And those ambitions seemingly included targeting Mina, who was also on the list of potential United arrivals in the summer .
The centre-back has yet to figure for the Blues since his switch from the Nou Camp in the summer, which followed on from his impressive World Cup in which he notched three goals for the South Americans.
Mourinho was seen in conversation with the man he failed to sign, and he’ll doubtless look to bring in a defender in January after the summer’s failings.
Mina is closing in on an Everton debut after playing in a behind closed doors friendly match at Everton’s Finch Farm training ground earlier this month, coming through it without further complications.
