Mourinho shuts down Ozil after claim he would rather retire than join Tottenham

Jose Mourinho has cheekily responded to Mesut Ozil's claim that he would rather retire than play for Tottenham.

The Arsenal midfielder has been strongly linked with a move away from the club this month as speculation continues to grow he could join Turkish side Fenerbahce in the coming days.

Although he has been frozen out of the Gunners side since March, Ozil played in a number of fierce North London derbies and clearly understood the importance of the fixture to supporters.

And when responding to a question about what he would choose between retiring or signing for Spurs during a Twitter Q&A he hosted on Monday night, Ozil replied: "Easy question. Retire!"

When asked about the comments in a press conference ahead of his side's game against Fulham on Tuesday, Mourinho gave a withering response by simply asking: "Who told him that Tottenham would be interested in signing him?"

Spurs take on Fulham in a hastily-rearranged fixture after their game against Aston Villa was called off due to a coronavirus outbreak in the Villa camp.

Fulham are said to be furious by being asked to play the game with just 48 hours notice, but Mourinho insisted it was the right decision.

"The biggest impact is to have matches postponed, that is the biggest impact," he added.

"I think it is a solution we all have to accept as a positive."

And Mourinho also shut down reports linking Harry Winks with a move to Valencia, insisting that the midfielder is "going nowhere."

Spurs will be looking to continue their recent improved form, having won their last three games in all competition.

Following the game against Fulham they take on struggling Sheffield United in the Premier League before an FA Cup fourth round tie against Wycombe Wanderers.
