Manchester United made costly errors on the pitch in their Champions League defeat on Wednesday night but rival fans have also been quick to capitalise on a mistake on the club’s Twitter account.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side were beaten 2-1 by Istanbul Basaksehir in what was a dreadful defensive display in Group H on Wednesday evening.

But United were also mocked for using the Europa League instead of the Champions League hashtag on their official Twitter account following the tie.

Manchester United’s Twitter account made an error by posting the Europa League hashtag

United had a night to forget in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, losing 2-1 in Turkey

In a post linking to quotes from the United manager on his team selection #UEL was tagged, which rival fans spotted.

One Twitter user wrote: ‘They are probably playing in a wrong league, they know where they belong #UEL,’ while another added: ‘They already aim for UEL knockout stage this season. @ManUtd know their place.’

A fan replied to the error, writing: ‘That club is lost. Already started on UEL preparations.’

Rival fans mocked the Red Devils Twitter account for using the wrong competition’s hashtag 

United, who who were knocked out of the Europa League at the semi-final stage last season, were woeful at the back in their shock defeat in Turkey and former United midfielder Paul Scholes tore into Manchester United’s hapless defenders. 

He  slammed the defending as ‘Under 10s football’ after Demba Ba was left all on his own to break away and score the opening goal inside just 12 minutes.

And in response to the Europa League hashtag error, one fan wrote: ‘The way they have being playing even the admin knows it ain’t UCL standards.’ 

Wednesday’s defeat still left United top of Group H at the halfway stage following their impressive victories over Paris Saint-Germain and RB Leipzig.
