Manchester United may have a ‘younger Edinson Cavani’ already at Old Trafford

Man Utd: Solskjaer says Cavani demanded no.7 shirt

Manchester United have been told they need to sign a ‘younger Edinson Cavani’ if they’re to end their wait for a 21st Premier League crown. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer signed the veteran on a free transfer back in the summer but, at the age of 33, he’s approaching the twilight years of his career. But, in Joe Hugill, the Red Devils may already have an ideal replacement.

Speaking on Sunday, talkSPORT pundit Jason Cundy urged United to sign a ‘younger’ version of Cavani to replace Anthony Martial.

Martial has scored just twice in domestic football this term, with the France international failing to build on his 23-goal haul last term.

And Cundy said: “The things that we know about United, for me now, is no Bruno [Fernandes] no party.

“If he comes to the party then United really tick.

“[But] United need a centre-forward. Martial again has shown that he just isn’t the answer. He’s not the answer up front.

“I mean, really [Marcus] Rashford is not that No 9 either, they have a role to play, but they need a younger Cavani.

“They missed Cavani [against City]. He would have played, whether he would have started or come off the bench, who knows, but they missed him, they really did miss him.”

And the good news is for United that, sitting in their academy, is prolific goalscorer Hugill.

His record at youth level is extraordinary. He’s not a blockbuster name, at least yet, but looks as though he’s got the potential to become a huge Old Trafford hit.

Back in the summer, United signed the 17-year-old from Sunderland.

They did so after he’d impressed them with his magical left foot, with the teenager using it to cause havoc on young defences across the country.

And, since then, he’s shown himself to be deadly.

Hugill has scored four goals from nine Premier League 2 matches since being promoted earlier in the season, having previously scored six in four appearances in the Under-18s Premier League.

For Sunderland last term, he averaged a goal every two games – scoring four in three separate competitions.

It was reported by the Manchester Evening News that, so excited are United about Hugill, they’re primed to give him a professional contract until 2023.

His promotion to the Under-23s was rare given he was only a first-year scholar.

But his outstanding goalscoring form suggests he could answer Cundy’s call for a younger Cavani further down the line, if and when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer deems him ready.

The good news for the Red Devils is that Cavani doesn’t look like leaving anytime soon.

The Uruguay international signed a one-year contract upon joining back in the summer but Solskjaer has already expressed a desire to see him extend his stay.

“At the moment it looks like he’s got a few years left in him so I wouldn’t say anything else,” he said.

“He has made a great impact when he’s come here, so let’s focus on improving everyone as well. But he’s got a few years left in him.”
