Man Utd told to muscle in on Man City transfer move for Kalidou Koulibaly

Ian Wright believes Manchester United should swoop for Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly if they want to challenge for the Premier League title this season.

The Senegalese international has formed a reputation as one of the best centre-backs in Europe following his impressive displays in Serie A and the Champions League in the last few seasons.

United's bitter enemies Manchester City have been the side most strongly linked with the 29-year-old, but speaking to Premier League Productions Wright said the Red Devils should rival their neighbours for his signature.

"We saw with the one signing in [Bruno] Fernandes that it all changed for Manchester United," Wright said.

"But for me in the defensive point of view they’re still very weak. We’re hearing City might get Koulibaly but they’ve [United] got to be going in there trying to do that, they’ve got to be trying to do that deal.

"Aaron Wan-Bissaka is a fanststic defender but [Victor] Lindelof and [Harry] Maguire and the left side [Luke Shaw] – those three are there for the taking.

"If you’re to challenge those teams [Liverpool & Manchester City] they’ve got to be a lot stronger. it's not strong enough for me at the moment."

United's No.1 target before the transfer window closes next month is still thought to be Jadon Sancho, but Wright thinks improving their defence should be the priority.

"They’ve got Fernandes, they’ve got Pogba," he added. "As much as Sancho, we’re seeing great things. Man United need to do what Liverpool did – address the problems and then go from there."

It is believed Napoli are willing to let Koulibaly leave this summer due to perilous financial situation at the club, but they are currently holding out for a fee of no less than £80m.
